Nursing Clinical Research Program at Salinas Valley Health

Innovation and Research

Magnet®-designated hospitals have structures and processes to support nurses to integrate evidence-based practice and research into practice and to facilitate front-line clinical inquiry and innovation.

Evidence-Based Practice

The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice (JHEBP) Model is used at Salinas Valley Health Medical Center to guide clinicians through a stepwise, systematic inquiry process to address clinical questions. This involves defining the clinical question or problem, gathering and evaluating evidence related to the problem, then synthesizing and translating the evidence into a recommendation. Depending on the nature of the problem and the evidence related to it, the recommendation can lead to one of three project types: quality or performance improvement (QI or PI), evidence-based practice (EBP), or a research study. In this way, the JHEBP Model is an inquiry continuum.

With oversight from the Magnet Department and support from the Clinical Inquiry Council, a JHEBP cohort is offered each year. Teams work together over four full-day classes in four months. This process takes the participant through all stages of the inquiry process, from a clinical question to the implementation of a practice change and provides in-class time to complete steps in the process. Nurses are later supported to share the results of their initiative in a poster presentation featured at our annual poster expo or for external dissemination at a professional organization or in a professional journal. Explore our most recent internal and external disseminations here.

Nursing Research

Nurses who are interested in conducting research are mentored on the research process by internal and external experts. The medical center supports clinical nurses who are serving as a principal investigator (PI) or co-PI with approved time off the schedule to complete protocol development, recruitment, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation.
