A unique summer camp program is underway at Salinas Valley Health. The enthusiastic campers are on campus for a two week, behind the scenes introduction to the healthcare field.
This summer’s cohort consists of 29 students, grades 4th – 6th grades across Monterey County. The fun camp format exposures this age group to a variety of educational opportunities and interactive group activities. Salinas Valley Health launched the program in 2001 as one of many community outreach and student support initiatives.
The program covers a wide range of opportunities from learning about advanced medical technology to enjoying art therapy and physical fitness activities. Many of the student volunteers who help guide the campers are themselves graduates of the student programs at Salinas Valley Health including Summer Health Institute designed for high school students with an interest in a healthcare career. Medical Center staff and physicians engage the campers in lessons and activities.
The program culminates with a trip to the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose and a graduation ceremony on Friday, July 28. Medical Adventure Camp is sponsored by the Service League Volunteers, Children's Miracle Network, Salinas Valley Health, and individual donors. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of the $200 enrollment fee for those families who need financial assistance to participate.
