The start of a New Year brings with it hope for new beginnings and better days ahead. While living healthier is a popular resolution, the energy behind that commitment too often fades. The exercise plan and diet give way to the pressures of life – yet we are here to help. At Salinas Valley Health, we know good health doesn’t just happen, it’s something you build on – and is something done better with others.
The pandemic underscored the importance of adaptability, access to services and the power of connection. That connection is something we feel strongly about. Blue Zones Project – Monterey County, which we are proud to sponsor, is an evidence-based approach to health that has a strong focus on connection.
The goal of Blue Zones Project is to change a community’s environment to make the healthy choice the easy choice. It involves everyone – worksites, schools, faith-based organizations, restaurants and grocery stores – and takes a systemic approach to improve well-being through policy, design and collaboration.
Blue Zones engages people in ways that change their mindsets and habits. Its events, which span throughout Monterey County, are a great way to connect with other community members. They spark motivation and inspiration. From beach and park cleanups, cooking demonstrations, walking and hiking groups, dance classes, and purpose workshops, to online challenges with rewards, Blue Zones wraps its focus on sustainable health with the warmth and connection of community.
Our organization also offers Pathways to Wellness, a wealth of resources and classes – online and in print. From getting ready for a new baby to classes on diabetes foot care, nutrition services for cancer survivors, support groups for cardiac patients, legal issues for life planning seminars, meditation classes, our Salinas Valley Health Mobile Clinic schedule, and more, Pathways to Wellness shares knowledge, support and opportunities for connection.
Health connects with everything we do. It happens with every decision we make, and it is an ongoing journey. For nearly seventy years, Salinas Valley Healthcare System has led our community in that journey. As we embark on this New Year, 2023, we invite you to join us on your Pathway to Wellness. The easy changes that can make a big difference are often right in front of us – and we have a lot to offer!
