For some families, getting their flu shot at a Salinas Valley Health’s free community clinic has become an annual tradition. Once again, hundreds of people showed up today for one of the first clinics of the season held in collaboration with the Monterey County Public Health Department.
“We’re thrilled with the turnout,” says Pete Delgado, President/CEO of Salinas Valley Health. “We avoided a severe flu season last year.. Many experts say that’s not going to be the case this year. Every person who gets vaccinated against the flu and against COVID-19 is not only protecting themselves, they are helping to protect our entire community this winter. We thank them and our tremendous volunteers who help support our free vaccination clinics.”
More than 50 Salinas Valley Health nurses, staff and Hartnell nursing students helped with Saturday’s event held at the medical center campus in partnership with the Monterey County Health department.
The clinical team administered nearly 500 flu shots and provided more than 60 COVID-19 Pfizer vaccines.
Additional clinics are being held in the coming weeks.

People should not attend community clinics if they have a fever or are not feeling well with any COVID-19 or flu like symptoms or have recently been in contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. Masks are required and social distancing will be in place. Families should avoid bringing anyone to the clinic who is not receiving a vaccine.
The flu vaccine is provided to anyone six months and older. The COVID-19 vaccine is offered to people 12 and older wanting a first or second shot of the FDA approved Pfizer vaccine. It is also available as a booster or third shot for those who had previously received the Pfizer rounds and may have waning immunity.
